Adult Psychology in Melbourne
We're a neuroaffirming, trauma-informed psychology practice supporting adults through anxiety, trauma, burnout, the perinatal period and neurodivergence. Select clinicians also offer EMDR. See us in-clinic in Essendon or via telehealth anywhere in Australia.
At Better Together Therapy, we support adults who are carrying chronic stress, trauma, anxiety, relationship difficulties, burnout, parenting demands, grief or workplace pressure - often after years of coping alone.
You might feel emotionally exhausted, disconnected from yourself, constantly on edge, or unsure why everyday life feels harder than it seems to be for everyone else. Our psychologists offer a compassionate, collaborative space to understand what's going on, work through it, and build ways of coping that actually hold up long-term.
How we support adults
-
Including social anxiety, panic attacks and panic disorder, OCD, health anxiety, phobias, generalised anxiety, chronic stress, high-functioning anxiety, perfectionism and overthinking. Many adults experience persistent worry, nervous-system dysregulation, racing thoughts, emotional exhaustion, irritability, or difficulty slowing down and feeling safe in everyday life.
-
Some adults experience emotional exhaustion, hopelessness, withdrawal, loss of motivation, self-critical thoughts, difficulty experiencing enjoyment or connection, or feelings of being stuck. Therapy supports emotional understanding, coping strategies, self-compassion and overall wellbeing.
-
Workplace pressures and chronic stress can affect emotional wellbeing, relationships, sleep, confidence and overall functioning. We support adults navigating burnout, workplace stress, perfectionism, emotional exhaustion, work-life balance difficulties, people-pleasing and boundary difficulties.
-
Pregnancy, parenthood, fertility experiences and identity changes can involve significant emotional and psychological adjustment. We support adults experiencing antenatal anxiety and depression, postnatal anxiety and depression, parenting overwhelm, emotional exhaustion, adjustment to parenthood, and identity changes following parenthood.
-
Life transitions and experiences of grief can deeply affect emotional wellbeing. We support adults navigating grief and loss, separation and divorce, relationship changes, identity transitions, adjustment-related stress and major life changes.
-
Some adults experience long-standing difficulties related to self-esteem, emotional regulation, boundaries, anger and frustration, relationship difficulties, interpersonal conflict or personality-related difficulties. Therapy supports greater emotional awareness, healthier relational patterns, self-understanding and sustainable coping strategies.
-
Many adults experience distress related to food, eating and body image. This can include restrictive eating, binge eating, emotional eating, food guilt, body dissatisfaction, perfectionism related to appearance, or feeling disconnected from hunger and fullness cues. Therapy provides a supportive, non-judgemental space to explore the emotional and psychological factors contributing to these experiences, strengthen coping strategies, and develop a more compassionate relationship with food and body image.
EMDR for trauma and complex trauma
Many adults we support have experienced childhood trauma, emotionally unsafe environments, attachment wounds, grief and loss, relationship trauma, chronic stress or overwhelming life experiences. These experiences often continue affecting emotional wellbeing, relationships, self-esteem, emotional regulation and nervous-system functioning long after the event itself has passed.
Our psychologists provide trauma-informed support and offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy where clinically appropriate. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy specifically designed to help process traumatic memories and reduce their ongoing emotional impact. Sessions may run for 90 minutes to allow time for the work.
Neuroaffirming support for AuDHD and neurodivergent adults
Many neurodivergent adults grow up feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or burnt out from years of masking and trying to meet expectations that did not align with their nervous-system needs.
We provide neuroaffirming support for autistic, ADHD and AuDHD adults navigating:
executive functioning difficulties
autistic and AuDHD burnout
emotional regulation challenges
sensory overwhelm
masking and exhaustion
rejection sensitivity
identity and self-understanding
late diagnosis and reframing your story
Whether you have a diagnosis or you're still working it out, we meet you where you are.
Neuroaffirming and trauma-informed approach
Emotional wellbeing cannot be separated from nervous systems, relationships, environments, identity and lived experience. Our psychologists work from a neuroaffirming and trauma-informed framework that supports adults with compassion, collaboration, respect and evidence-based care. We aim to create a space where adults feel understood, not judged.
